Afforestation & Deforestation

Support communities to restore 400 acres of deforested and degraded communal and individual land through tree growing (afforestation, reforestation and agroforestry).

Trees planted provide a wide range of benefits including but not limited to wind breaks, medicine, fodder, shade, fuel wood and other social-economic and environmental benefits. Therefore, communal tree growing is hands on-farm approach, community led and on individual or groups or schools, churches etc. available and committed land.

The approach involved mapping hot spot areas, identifying and mobilizing farmers/landowners within the hotspots who were willing to engage in tree growing. The awareness raising meetings have been held with the farmers using the Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC). The FPIC ensured that the farmers are willing to engage in afforestation, reforestation, and agroforestry, understand the benefits involved, and consent. Care is being taken and ensuring food security and the existing land tenure systems are upheld with the guidance from district /sub-county technical extension officers and community facilitators are being facilitated to undertake farmer recruitment and capacity training activities of the project with technical supervision of MIFA Forestry /tree growing expert.

Tree growing

MIFA has procured and distributed tools and materials (wheelbarrows, hoes with handles, spades, pangas, etc.) to 500 households to support the tree growing actions. A total of 400,000 assorted tree seedlings of various species have been procured and delivered to selected farmers for planting during the growing season. The species will are mainly Melicia excelsa(Mvule), Maesopsis eminii (Musizi), Terminaliaand Grevillea robusta and Senna siameaspecies of average height of 30cm .The distribution was for communities to grow on individual, communal and public lands that have been pre-selected and mapped out. The target is 400acres of the degraded land and bare hills. The seedlings are being planted at a spacing of 5m x 5m under technical supervision of the foresters The choice of the seedlings have been premised on the desires and demands of the farmers based on the ‘use values’ and the technical guidance from the team. The balance made ensured ‘farmer utility’ and ‘environmental benefits’ are balanced in the selection of the species. Prior to the procurement of seedlings and distribution, MIFA has conducted a species mapping exercise with the farmers to determine the preferred use value of the tree species and the available land to commit to the project. This has been undertaken together with the community based facilitators who are agents of tree growing within the selected villages in the lower Nyamwamba catchment.

To ensure high survival rate, MIFA has conducted 4 capacity trainings targeting 500 households in tree growing and forest management. MIFA in addition has empowered 150 members of sub-catchment and micro catchment structures to develop and enforce bye-laws to manage the tree growing. A total of 3 meetings was organised consisting of 50 participants each. During the meeting, MIFA together with the community members and other stakeholders agreed on tree growing modalities (role allocation e.g. who does what amongst the farmers and the implementing entities). Modules to guide during the various stages of tree growing was developed and used to guide farmer actions. The pre-planting activities include; bush-clearing, lining, pitting, seedling delivery to nearest delivery site, while post establishment management interventions will include; spot weeding, periodic watering, control of fires, and management of stray animals. The actual planting activities include; planting on designated days and watering. In all this, the ‘Cash for Work’ model that involves community participation in the execution of the various tasks involved in tree growing was emphasised, thus creating green jobs for the communities. This created a sense of ownership of the project. A team of field-based foresters are supervising the activities to ensure on garden compliance. In addition, each village selected a community facilitator who was trained in basic tree growing aspects to supervise the exercise.

To further ensure tree survival and growth of the seedlings, quarterly inspections and monitoring to provide extension services for 6 months after establishment has been conducted. The monitoring team to include technical staff from the DLGs, MCMC, SCMC, CMC, AWMZ team: This shall remain the responsibility of the MCMC, SCMC, CMC and the AWMZ staff after the project
